Nutrigenomics is the science of how your genes interact with the nutrients you consume. It's a field that sits at the intersection of molecular biology, genetics, and nutrition — and it's changing the way practitioners like me approach health.

For decades, dietary advice was built on population averages. Eat less fat. Eat more fiber. Reduce sodium. These recommendations work for some people some of the time — but they fail to account for the enormous variation in how individual bodies process food.

Your MTHFR gene, for example, affects how well you convert folate into its active form. A variant in your APOE gene influences how your body metabolizes dietary fat. Variants in your FTO gene are associated with appetite regulation and obesity risk. None of these are sentences — they're signals. And when you know what your signals are, you can eat in a way that works with your biology instead of against it.
